School Cluster Programs

STEM

Our students receive STEM education within our NEWLY renovated STEM lab! Within STEM students ask questions and solve problems that relate to the world they live in. Using the engineering-design process, students identify problems, design possible solutions, and test and evaluate those solutions. This process, combined with the study of math and science, helps students to find connections that make science, math and technology relevant to their lives and engaging for them.

Program Goals

Within P.S. 48 we strive to provide our students with a multitude of opportunities towards their growth as learners. We provide the following programs to enrich student learning during their academic enrollment here.

Visual Arts

Arts education refers to dance, moving image, music, theater, and visual arts. An arts education teaches creativity, cooperation, discipline, analysis, and other important life skills. Students also develop positive outlets for self-expression! Within our school students get to create various forms of art through an eclectic resource of artistic styles.

Theater

In Theater, 3k, Pre-K and K students activate and use their imagination through creative drama activities and storytelling. First graders explore ensemble acting and memorization techniques through participatory stories from different cultures. Second graders develop the actors' instruments: voice, body and mind, while participating in play productions. Third and fourth graders engage in complex acting settings such as full-length rehearsals or scene work to explore theater making processes through various roles: actor, director, designer, spectator and critic. Dual language students in fourth grade are trained in Jacques Lecoq's Pantomime for Actors Technique, which prepare them for the Experimental Theater course in fifth grade. Other fifth grade classes focus on acting or play-writing, with a specific theme or historic period.

SEL

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) “is the process through which children, youth, and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.”

Physical Education

Physical education (PE) is a required academic subject that teaches students how to be physically active! In PE, students learn to work as a team, develop healthy personal fitness habits, and set fitness goals now and throughout their lives
